Little BIG Differences – When the online world meets the real world

The thank you card from Lindsay

Last Friday I was a part of the Social Media Round Table at Two Rivers Business Centre where I helped to shed some light on how to use online marketing to grow your business.

In today’s fast paced environment, we are almost running faster than we can think… having 140 character conversations, asking questions in bullet points and popping emails back and forth.

I teach all the little short cuts that get you to the top of search engines, and optimize your site just so that the big boys at google, facebook, or YouTube might actually show your stuff… and how 140 characters can actually turn into business.

In fact, in my last post, I taught that a 5 minute video is just too long because people won’t sit and watch it!

But today with my morning coffee, I was touched when I opened my snail mail.

Lindsay Cotter (@lindsaycotter) from the local Prince George Airport, one of the participants last Friday, took the time to send me a handwritten thank you card.

Needless to say it brought a huge smile to my face and it made me think about my message as an online marketing mentor.

Although we are mostly high tailing it into the online world, there is something about old school traditions that just cannot be duplicated in the online world.

Believe me, I am not saying… let’s get on our horses and go back to bringing over baked goods every time something wonderful happens (however, if you’d like, I’ll give you my address and a place to tie up your horse!)

Instead, what this made me think about was the little BIG differences that leave a lasting impact. There are pieces we can put online, send from our different techno gadgets, automate, and delegate… BUT what should we not?

From the time I could remember, the words “Thank You” were the only two words we could NEVER forget growing up. It is also the only two words that I do the stand off with my kids for what feels like hours! (My husband tries to make them open each present slowly without throwing it behind and screaming, “what’s next”… it’s getting harder the older they are becoming!)

In business and in life, the more grateful we are, the more we attract things to be grateful for! The more energy we spend expressing our gratitude, the more we magnetize abundance.

So, although we are moving our lives and our businesses all online… taking the moment to use some old fashioned traditions of our physical world not only builds goodwill, but it will give us the edge we all strive to have in our businesses and help us attract more of what we want… more things to be grateful for each day.

I would love to hear your thoughts or things that you might do that are the little BIG differences… it might not be handwritten cards… but do you pick up the phone to call? What do you think is important to keep as “Your little BIG difference”?

Please share below.

PS. The funny thing about it all is that I ended up having a conversation with Lindsay about her professional experience after everyone had left that day. I remember being amazed at how she had moved into upper level positions at such a young age. I also remember thinking, “Um, I wonder what’s her edge?”…

Well, now we know! Thanks for making me think and write this post Lindsay.

PPS. If you are looking for other AWESOMENESS from my city, you have to check this post out too.
